Agency Glossary
Spam
Spam is comprised of unsolicited emails containing advertisements. It is considered such an abuse of electronic messaging systems that in recent years, steps have been taken to protect internet users. E-mail filters weed out potential spam and work to keep inboxes relatively uncluttered. Spam has spilled from email campaigns and has also begun appearing on blogs, cell phone messages, instant messages and discussion forums. In order to curb the amount of spam that infiltrates emails, President Bush signed the CAN-SPAM Act in 2003. Basically, it requires all email adverts to pass the Federal Trade Commission's standards before being passed to the public.
